WORD OF THE DAY - Saturday 03 April 2010

“Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests, and to the scribes; and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles: And they will mock him, and scourge him, and spit upon him, and kill him; and the third day he will rise again.” (Mark 10:33-34)

God Almighty, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for allowing us to experience another day of this earthly existence and to know that we are watched over and cared for by your great love. As many people around the world pause to reflect upon the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus our Lord, help us to be more diligent each day of the year by behaving in such a manner that skeptical people will see the risen and living Christ in us. We are overwhelmed with emotions when we consider that our Savior suffered for our many sins. Give us bright hopes as we consider the reality of the resurrection. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

This morning we have our appointment to teach a group of 17 boys at the boy's home. We will be working with some teenagers today. As usual, they will present the greatest challenge. When the director was interviewing us for this possible relationship, he wanted to know what we expected from them, and if we intended to help them in any way. We noticed how clean and tidy everything was even though the place is badly rundown and is underfunded. I replied to him that we never come empty handed. He responded, "We'll see." Friday was our only day to have enough free time to run around (walk and ride) the city looking for good things that we can carry with us. For the first visit with this group of boys, we decided to give each boy a small toy like a "hot wheels" type car and some sweets. It was a rainy day, so we just got soaked real good, but it was not too cold. We finally found what we needed at the large European retailer, Metro. We noticed how few customers were in the place, and a cashier told us that they were not hiring, but firing people due to the slow business. This megastore is far from us, so we rode a bus and hired a taxi to bring us home with our stuff. We have arranged for a taxi that is tall enough to drive over this ancient draw bridge we must cross to get to this remote place on a lonely peninsula of the Ingul River. If that doesn't work, we will have a long walk from the river bank to the orphan home that is behind a security fence. In any case, we know that God is with us as we go to show His love to these wayward orphan boys. Yesterday I was also able to make an appointment with our University for Tuesday the 12th of April. Tatyana, the Chair of the English faculty that we work with, was very excited that we can work with them again. Galina called and talked with her family that lives in Slavyansk in the Donetsk region, and learned that her Papa is critically ill and her elderly and ailing Mama struggles to care for him. Train travel to this city from Nikolaev is not on a daily basis. So, we arranged to catch a bus for the 12 hour ride Sunday night. We plan to spend about 3 days there and be back in Nikolaev on Thursday or Friday. We will also be able to visit with our dear friends Viktor Semikoz and his wife Oksana who helped us with our Bible camp last year. Viktor preaches at the Church of Christ in Svyatogorsk. Maybe we can coax them into some more participation with this work. Thank you for your many prayers and kind words of encouragement.
