WORD OF THE DAY - 31 December 2011 from Montgomery, Alabama

But to you that fear my name, the Sun of righteousness shall arise with healing in his wings; and you shall go out leaping as calves from the stall. (Malachi 4:2)

Dear LORD our God ~ Thank you Kind Father for the arrival of another very special day for all who trust in your unsurpassable providential care. Give us wisdom as we close out another year so that we will learn from our mistakes and accomplishments in order to be more pleasing to you and more productive in the glorious Kingdom of Christ. In the blessed name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Photo: These three young Christians - Dima, Styopa and Pasha have grown up in the Magadan, Russia Church of Christ thanks to their parents - Olga, Anya, Ivan & Nadya. Pasha has the look of one who just returned from a year of duty with the Russian Army. We received this photo recently from Olga by way of our brother Vasily's camera. We have much encouragement for the future of this church with young men willing to spend time learning more about Christ. Now that we have our Russian visas, God willing, we plan to travel to Magadan in the early spring of the year 2011. We are very thankful to all of you who regularly pray for this congregation as well as the young church in Nikoleav, Ukraine and for the struggling church at Inta in the Komi Republic that is part of the Russian Federation. I never forget for one second the church in Khabarovsk that was begun in 1993 with much great struggle and many fervent prayers. If it is the Lord's will, we also want to travel to Magadan via Khabarovsk and assemble for a few days with the brethren in this great city along the Amur River.

WORD OF THE DAY - Friday 24 December 2010

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. --The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. (Psalm 51:10, 17)

(Salmos 51:10, 17 Spanish)

Most Holy God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for this new day that arrives with numerous reasons for every person in the world to rejoice – especially everyone who is following Jesus Christ as Lord and King. As we reflect upon the reasons why Christ came to this world that abounds in evil, give us wisdom and courage so that our minds will not be busy with formalized religious rituals and ceremonies. Rather help us to look at ourselves with utmost sincerity and truly repent of our sins as we turn our hearts fully to serving Christ while we have time in this life. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Photo: Yesterday my sister Candace Baxley called and informed us that she was in Montgomery spending a few days with her "mother in-law". Her son Joel brought his youth group from Signal Mountain, TN down to Cedar Key and helped us put on some very good VBS programs a few years ago. We met at a nearby Walmart superstore and talked while we shopped and later stopped by the Burger King and talked some more. When she told us that she was now retired from her work with a public school in Florida, we immediately suggested that she visit us in Nikolaev and help out in that work in Ukraine. She didn't say no to this, so we will begin to pray for Candace to find her way over to help us in the great work of sharing the gospel and reaching out to orphan children in Ukraine. Thank you for your faithful prayers for this work and other efforts around the world that help people learn the truth and be saved.

WORD OF THE DAY - Sunday 19 December 2010

Ken and Linda Dunham, longtime friends from our time in Georgia invited us up to their beautiful home in a remote area on Lake Jordan yesterday afternoon around dusk.
Their neighbors also have docks for their boats, but for many neighbors the home on the lake is a second home. We thoroughly enjoyed our drive through the woods to get to their home and spending time with them. Ken is on the faculty of Jones Law School which is affiliated with Faulkner University. On the ride up to the lake from Montgomery, Ken and I talked about our experiences on mission trips to the Caribbean Island of St. Vincent, West Indies.

The purpose of the ride up to their home was because Ken had offered me the use of his truck for the remainder of our time here in America. We already had to pay a lot for rental car, and this will be a big savings for us. When we got there, they wanted us to choose between a very nice Solara convertible or the comfortable Toyota Tundra pickup. We chose the truck, and as we rode home we were singing "God is so good" in English and Russian. Ken said they will not need the truck for the remainder of our time here and encouraged us to make use of it. God's people everywhere are known for being good, kind and generous. Ivan is laid up in a Magadan hospital right now, and I know that if he had a car he would loan it to us without hesitation. When we lived in Florida, Christian friends also surprised us by loaning us their new truck for a trip to Virginia to see grandchildren. It is always a joy to be together with God's wonderful people. So many of you regularly make generous donations that make it possible for us to spread the beautiful message of hope and salvation as well as providing help to poor orphans. Thank you for your many prayers and kind deeds. Today at Dalraida Church of Christ, brother Earl Edwards, who has done a great deal of work as a missionary in Europe, will begin a special series of lessons on the theme, "Protecting our Blind Side". He spent many years preaching and teaching others how to preach.

Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning, I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation. (Psalm 5:1-3 NIV)

(Salmos 5:1-4 NVI)

Almighty God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for this new Lord’s Day that arrives with opportunities to assemble with others who have the same precious faith. Remember those who feel so broken hearted over the loss of a loved one that they have no strength or courage to face their friends. Give us wisdom so that we will properly divide the word of truth and faithfully proclaim the message of Christ to people of our generation throughout the world. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

WORD OF THE DAY Saturday 18 December 2010

And he (Father) put all things in subjection under his (Jesus Christ) feet, and gave him to be head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. (Ephesians 1:22-23)
(Efesios 1:22-23 Spanish)

Most Holy, Wise and Beneficent God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for the amazing gift of life on this pristine new day that you have given us. Give us wisdom as we search the scriptures and do our best to be obedient children. Forgive us for the times when we have blinked our eyes and wandered from the perfect plan you have for our lives. Restore our trust and confidence in Christ alone as the One and Only Head over His glorious church. Help all believers to conscientiously struggle for unity in the Body of Christ. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

After we haggled again for a while at the car dealership, we finally were ready to head back to Alabama. Since William Binkley and his wife Lisa live in nearby Bronson, they came over to the Oaks Mall in Gainesville, and we had a nice visit in the food court. Bill is suffering from a Parkinson like disease that is making it impossible for him to function normally since the motion and balance part of his brain causes his body to act with involuntary movements. We are very thankful for the treatment and care he receives at the Veteran's Hospital in Gainesville. It just happens that his doctor is also a respected neurologist at the Shands Teaching Hospital of the University of Florida. As we rode back to Alabama we were driving in a major rain storm most of the way. Thank you for the many prayers.

WORD OF THE DAY - Friday 10 December 2010

You are from God, my little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4)

(1 Juan 4:4 Spanish)

Dear God, our Awesome Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for the sparkling array of fresh evidence that confirms your perfect ingenuity and abiding presence in the world you created for all mankind. Give us wisdom to discern those who speak evil shrouded in truth. Renew our confidence in our eternal hope as we remember how Christ is ultimately victorious over the Devil and his demons. We are deeply grateful that your Holy Spirit is dwelling in all faithful Christians. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

We took a ride downtown last night as the temperature was around 0 C, and asked Zhenya to take our picture in front of the state capital building in Montgomery, Alabama. The tree is very beautiful since most of the "trees" around the hotels and convention centers are artificial. The concept of Christmas trees is something that is extra-Biblical, but in America and some other countries, it doesn't seem to represent any type of pagan religious practice. In Russia and some other northern European countries, the "yolka" tree is celebrated with gift giving on New Year's Day in a similar manner as people in the Americas and some other places share gifts around the "Christmas" tree. Some people never hear anything or think about our Lord Jesus Christ except at this time of they year. This represents an unusual evangelistic opportunity for many Christians who may find their relatives and acquaintances receptive to the Gospel message of salvation from sin and the gift of eternal life. Thank you for the prayers.

WORD OF THE DAY - Thursday 09 December 2010

We were able to visit with our dear friends Laura and George Delaino. While living in Cedar Key, we had an early morning prayer and Bible study hour that included some refreshments and great conversation. This was also a time to meet new people in the community and make friends. This couple was there if we were there. Laura Jean has been a faithful member of the congregation since her teenage years due to the good example of her mother. Now she has problems with her vision that makes it impossible for her to read the daily Word of the Day. Laura made friends with Olga in Magadan and when she was able to see good, she would always write something to Olga as a way of encouraging her in the faith. And Olga wrote many good letters to Laura that she treasures. It is wonderful the way God's people truly love one another even though we may never meet on this side of Heaven, but we know that after this life if over, we will have that joyful and eternal fellowship with our Lord as we follow Him. Thank you for your prayers for this important mission work.

While we were waiting on the car dealership to make a decision about the car, we took a ride out to Cedar Key where I preached the Gospel from August 2001 until August 2008. This was during the time when I was unable to obtain a travel visa for Russia. We have many dear friends there and long to be able to visit them after our next mission work in Ukraine and Russia. Galina enjoyed her work there with the Cedar Key Historical Society Museum and we both stayed involved with community activities such as working as poll workers during elections. We noticed that the sagging world economy has taken its toll on many small businesses in this Gulf Coast island community. Several familiar and "landmark" restaurants and other shops were closed. However, this small town has a resilient core of people who will do everything possible to bring back successful businesses to the community. The city economy is fed to a large extent by the local clam industry. Cedar Key clams are shipped all over the world. Like the rest of Florida, many dollars come from tourists from other states as well as Canada and some other countries.

In addition to growing cotton and peanuts, this region of south Alabama, south Georgia and north Florida has many large cattle ranches. All the Cowboys don't live in Texas.

Cotton farmers in southeast Alabama and southwest Georgia were working hard to bring in their cotton. There were so many of these large round bails that it seemed to be countless. However, we noticed that everything was in order.

This photo was taken Tuesday morning as the rising sun greeted us on the highway between Dothan, Alabama and Donaldsonville, Georgia. We had to take a trip down to the automobile dealership where our car is being worked on. We were able to meet with the manager of the service department and settle the dispute and they promised to have the car ready Friday. It costs too much to stay in hotels for those days, so we just drove back up to Montgomery so that we can continue working on our plans for going back to our Ukraine and Russia work in January.

And the tempter came and said to Him (Jesus), “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:3-4)

(Mateo 4:3-4 Spanish)

Dear God, our Most Holy, Kind, and Merciful Father in Heaven ~ Thank you of the incredible gift of life on this new day. We are in awe of the beautiful “green pastures” that you have led us through. According to your mercy, do not lead us into temptation like the situations that our Savior encountered in the wilderness with our adversary Satan. Lead us into righteousness as we learn and obey the will of Christ our Lord. Protect us with your Spirit as we follow the Way. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

WORD OF THE DAY - Wednesday 08 December 2010

Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. O LORD, you preserve both man and beast. (Psalm 36:5-6 NIV)
(Salmos 36:5-6 Spanish)

Almighty God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ we are lacking the proper vocabulary to praise your Holy and Righteous Name as we should, but we come to you with a sense of deepest gratitude for the tremendous love that you have for all your creatures. Give us more of your wisdom as we do our best to remain faithful to Christ the Lord. Help us to use the perfect wisdom of our Savior to properly conduct ourselves each day and to persuade others to follow the One and Only Way to eternal life. In the blessed name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Photo: Yesterday we drove out to Cedar Key after we met with the car dealership that is repairing our car. We think we reached an amicable agreement whereby they are happy with the job and we can afford to pay them their due. Hopefully we will pick the car up today and head back to Montgomery, Our Russian visas may come this week. We enjoyed spending some quality time with our dear friends Laura Jean and George Delaino. They are both struggling with the problems that face everyone who ages gracefully. We didn't have time to visit with others since we stopped by and saw Bill in Bronson for a few moments. Laura Jean began to correspond with Olga in Magadan and regrets that she cannot continue this since her eyesight is now severely hampered. Thank you very much for your sincere and fervent prayers to God who loves all His children.

WORD OF THE DAY - 06 December 2010 from Montgomery, Alabama

Last night this congregation allowed me to show pictures and tell about our exciting and rewarding work of sowing gospel seeds in Nikolaev, Ukraine and Magadan, Russia. Galina and I sometimes wonder if people are tired of hearing from us, but this church showers us with encouragement and receives our reports with much the same joy that we feel by serving the Lord. They are truly our partners as we go forth with the message of hope and salvation. We also have other dedicated partnering churches as well as several individuals who send support to Dalraida for this work. With such encouragement behind us, we can make bold plans for our work in 2011 and beyond according to God's purpose. Thank you for your fervent prayers and encouragement.
PS My daughter Laura noticed yesterday that I had put "from Nikolaev, Ukraine" on my WOTD. It was just a keyboard actuator error. We are planning to be back in Nikolaev next month. We hope and expect to receive our Russian visas this week or next.

This congregation has been involved in local evangelistic activities, in other parts of America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, China, and since 1991 this church has had a very active role in taking the gospel to people in the former Soviet Union.

Doug Smith, Minister of the Gospel, welcomed everyone to the Sunday evening service at the Dalraida congregation.

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high. (Hebrews 1:3)

Dear God, our Majestic Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for the fascinating gift of life on this new day that is brimming over with fresh opportunities and provisions for the journey. Help us to use the wisdom we have already received from your kindness. Give us courage to step out and take action on projects that will make it possible for even more people around the world to have faith in Christ our Savior and King.

WORD OF THE DAY - Tuesday 30 November 2010 from Montgomery, Alabama

John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. (Mark 1:4)

(Marcos 1:4 Spanish)

Almighty God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for this new day that dawns with bright hopes and fresh opportunities to carry out your will in our daily affairs. Give us more of your perfect wisdom as we consider the humble, bold, and effective work of John the Baptist who reminded the Jewish people of their sins and their response was baptism in water. Help us to comprehend the submissive act of obedience by our Messiah Jesus, who began His earthly ministry by being baptized in the muddy waters of the Jordan River. Help all those who scoff and make fun of water baptism, to humbly repent in obedience to the teaching and example of Christ that places penitent believers in Christ where we receive all spiritual blessings. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Photo: Nikolai Tkhor obeyed the gospel of Jesus Christ by repenting of sins, confessing his faith in Jesus Christ and being baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of sins. After this he had a brief but highly productive life as a Christian serving the Lord in the Nikolaev Church of Christ. His death caught us off-guard, but reminded us that we must all be ready to meet the Lord. Our work with the boys at the Boys Home was made possible because of the influence of this good man. Thank you for your constant prayers for this work in Mykolayiv, Ukraine and Magadan, Russia.

WORD OF THE DAY - Monday 29 November 2010

And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it was the good pleasure of the Father that in him should all the fullness dwell. (Colossians 1:18-19)

Photo: This picture was made while we were on our last visit to Inta. Someone asked me yesterday when we were planning to return to our work in Ukraine and Russia. I responded that we plan to go back in early January. Then he suggested that we should not go in such bad weather. We do not go as tourists. We go to live among the people in the same conditions and circumstances that they must endure each day. It is our pleasure to be with our dear brothers and sisters in the former Soviet Union when they have nice warm weather, and also when they learn how to find beauty in God's blessing of a fresh snowfall. We have a few students from Nikolaev who continue to study their World English Institute lesson using the Bible. They do their lessons on-line and we grade their lessons and send them comments regarding their answers. It is amazing to observe how their knowledge and understanding of the Bible and English grows with each lesson. Thank you for your prayers and constant encouragement.

WORD OF THE DAY - Sunday 29 November 2010 from Montgomery, Alabama

Now the Spirit says expressly, that in later times some shall fall away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons. (1 Timothy 4:1)

(1 Timoteo 4:1 Spanish)

Almighty God, our Dear Father in Heaven ~ Thank you for the brightness of your presence in our lives on this new Lord’s Day on which all faithful believers assemble together in sweet communion in tribute of our blessed Lord and Savior. Give us wisdom so that we will pay closer attention to the truth taught by the Holy Spirit and not be deceived by false teachers who are listening to evil doctrine that in the end will bring destruction to all who are its victims. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Saturday 27 November 2010 from Montgomery, Alabama

The boys manned the helm of our home computer that usually sits idle while we are sowing the gospel seeds in Ukraine and Russia. In a few weeks, we look forward to visiting with other grandchildren in northern Virginia. This is my work station where the daily WORD is sent out over the Internet and where we have communication with some of our WEI students in Nikolaev. God is very good to us as we enjoy time here in the USA while we prepare for our upcoming work in the harvest field of the former Soviet Union. Thank you for your many prayers and words of encouragement.

Three grandkids blessed our home for a while yesterday. Galina enjoyed serving them her special cheese toast until the bread ran out. She also served up a fresh pot of borshch.

If the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall give life also to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwells in you. (Romans 8:11)

(Romanos 8:11 Spanish)

Most Kind and Richly Generous God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for the exhilarating gift of life on this blessing filled new day. Give us a portion of your perfect and infinite wisdom so that we may understand the written word and see beyond the mundane affairs of this day and gaze into what lies ahead for the faithful who follow Christ our Lord. When we consider our helpless situation as we dwell in these physical bodies of sin, help us not reject the powerful influence of your Holy Spirit. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

WORD OF THE DAY - Friday 26 November 2010

Four generations apart, yet able to have a friendly discussion during a southern style Thanksgiving dinner complete with sweet iced tea. We are very grateful to God for this special time that God has given us to be in the country. We are most thankful for your prayers as we begin to finalize our plans for returning to our work that is of vital importance to the future of the Body of Christ in Ukraine. Not to say that we are of such importance, but spreading the Good News about Jesus Christ and forgiveness of sins through faith in Him is of utmost importance for all people in the world.
Daughter Laura and Adelaide share a good laugh as David prepares his camera for a family album photograph.

I was captured and brought in under armed guard for interrogation by Captain Daniel and read my rights by officer Adelaide. They had fun with me going along with the game.

Grandsons Daniel and William had a little minor discussion on who would get to sit next to grandfather for the Thanksgiving dinner. Son in law and wise father intervened and settled that issue. When the call to come to dinner came, the boys had just finished playing that they were the Admiral and Captain in the Navy and I was handcuffed as a prisoner. It's never boring as a grandfather. When we started to eat after Daniel suggested for me to lead the prayer of thanksgiving, William sincerely asked "Grandfather, what are you thankful for today." I responded with "family first, good health, and our work for the Lord in Nikolaev, Ukraine." His answer was his family. It was a wonderful and heart touching exchange. They wanted to know why we must return to Ukraine so soon, while our dear ones there wonder why we are gone so long. It is times like this that sometimes makes it hard to make plans for long trips to the mission field, but they try to understand that our work for the Lord is very important.

We walked the kids dog around the block and had a great time chatting to catch up with the news from granddaughter Adelaide.

We enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving day with some family members yesterday. Here grandson William enjoys some of Galina's pilmeney (with Wm's mustard) while we wait for the turkey to get done. We also had much fun playing with the three grandchildren who were there.
For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body, but made alive by the Spirit, (1 Peter 3:18 NIV)

Most Holy and Righteous God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for the precious gift of life on this fresh day that arrives with countless blessings and opportunities to do your will by obeying Christ our Lord. We are in awe of the absolute truth that only one person lived a sinless and pure life. Moreover, we are astounded that the radiantly perfect Sinless One took all sins of humanity upon Himself as He died on the cross as our substitute. Revive our appreciation for what Jesus means to our families, friends, neighbors, enemies and all people of this world so that we will work earnestly to sincerely live like a true Christian so that others may believe us when we share the great plan of salvation with them. In the blessed name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

"The First Thanksgiving" Brownscombe - Jennie Agusta Brownscombe

Many people in the United States of America, Canada, and several other countries pause today and give thanks to God Almighty for the blessings of freedom and His providence that anticipates our physical and spiritual needs. Christians around the world constantly give thanks for our freedom in Christ that makes it possible to live with hope and without fear in a world where the devil influences many people to tremble before tyrants. Thank you for your prayers as we thank God for our blessed opportunity to share the gospel with many people. Galina and I greet our many friends who do not live in America, and wish you a day filled with love, joy, peace and hope as you continue to turn your hearts to Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

(1 Tesalonicenses 5:18 Spanish)

Most Kind and Holy God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for the unspeakable joy we feel as we count our many blessings on this day of thanksgiving even as we do each day. Bless our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world who also give thanks for their special place in your eternal Kingdom. Give us wisdom and courage so that we will begin to make a fresh appeal to all people to accept Jesus as their Lord before it is too late. In Christ name we pray, Amen.

WORD OF THE DAY - Wednesday 24 November 2010 from Montgomery, Alabama

Yesterday we drove down to Gainesville, Florida to give some assistance to our son William Binkley. He lives in Bronson and is able to receive good care and treatment at the very fine Veteran's hospital in Gainesville that is connected with the University of Florida teaching hospital. Various doctors have suggested that Bill is suffering from some form of Parkinson's disease although they have no specific diagnosis. On the way down we had some problems with a car and were stranded for a while last night on the Interstate highway. God was with us and a tow truck came and took the car to a repair shop and we finally reached a hotel around 01.00 AM. I wore a long sleeve shirt, but soon wished I had not since it was almost 90 degrees F in that part of Florida today. We arrived back home to Montgomery in a rental car that we will turn in tomorrow and try to figure out a car to borrow for a short time. Thank you for the constant and fervent prayers.

But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law. (Galatians 4:4)

Almighty God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for granting us life and breathe on this new day that we are privileged to spend under your watchful care. Give us wisdom, as we not only consider the Divine nature of Christ, but His human nature that he assumed at birth. Help us as we struggle to be more effective in sharing the truth with others that Christ was fully the same as we humans, except that He never sinned and He shares that righteousness with all who believe and obey the gospel message. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

WORD OF THE DAY - Thursday 18 November 2010

For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. (Colossians 1:9-10 NKJV)

Almighty God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for this wonderful new day that greets us with fresh blessings from your persistent love for your creatures made in your image. Give us wisdom as we study your sovereign will that is revealed for us in the Holy Scriptures. Help us not to violate your trust by desiring to peer into your hidden will that we do not need to know in order to be good, faithful and obedient servants of the Lord.

WORD OF THE DAY - Wednesday 17 November 2010

Yesterday evening as we made our daily walk around the neighborhood we noticed the trailing end of a large storm system as it passed over us. This morning the temperatures are a bit chilly again after several days of being warm. The air is very pleasant with that autumn crispness. We had planned to visit our granddaughter Adelaide at special school luncheon in Marietta, Georgia on Tuesday, but she became sick with a high fever and we had to postpone that special meeting. We hope to see her and her brothers very soon. We have three students from Nikolaev who are now regularly studying with us on-line. Galina and I pray that they will continue to grow in their knowledge of English and the Bible while studying the World English Institute courses. Thank you for the many faithful prayers regarding our work to spread the blessed gospel of Christ in Ukraine and Russia.

Sasha, an artist friend of ours who works in the building where the church meets in Nikolaev gave us this painting and we recently had it framed and hung it on the wall here in Montgomery. He knows about our love for the boys and chose just the right scene for us. This is the place on the river near the Boys Home where we spend quality time with several orphan boys.

How shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. (Hebrews 2:3-4 NIV)

(Hebreos 2:3-4 Spanish)

Most Awesome and Holy God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for this splendid new day and the awareness that we are your very special creatures who possess the possibility of eternal life in your presence. Give us wisdom as we follow the teachings revealed in the scriptures. Help us not to be deceived by those charlatans today who charm people into believing that an ordinary event is somehow equal to the supernatural miracles performed by Christ and others whom you chose to reveal your will. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

WORD OF THE DAY - Saturday 23 October 2010 from Mykolayiv, Ukraine

The study with Ludmila went very well. Whenever she answers a question, she does so with the greatest degree of care for retelling the truth. She can only come after she gets off work at the bank. She is planning to bring her mother with her to our early worship service on Sunday. It is wonderful to witness the way God's word is working in the hearts of these people who previously had little or no knowledge of God's wonderful plan for mankind. Last evening we received a call from our brother Nikolai Gagarkin who is now back in Nikolaev. Since his job keeps him out of town on business most of the time, he is rarely able to worship with the church here in Nikolaev. We have no other male leader, and we always hope and pray that God will send us one more man who will have a desire on his heart to help lead the church here into whatever future God has in mind for this church. Since we have no male to conduct the worship services, the only option open to us is to lock up the meeting room until we return. Luda and Stepan, the two who attend the most faithfully live close to one another and can have a worship service in their home. This is far from ideal, but we must trust God in these matters. It is our task to sow the gospel seeds and God is giving the increase as others will come along and provide the water and other forms of care. We continue to almost shout for joy each time we consider how God is blessing our efforts here in Ukraine. Galina's overnight bus arrived about an hour ago and she is already warming up something in the kitchen. She just gave me some walnuts from the trees on her mothers property in Slavyansk. Fresh and delicious! We just had a nice Skype conversation with our brother Ivan in Magadan. This is a wonderful technology that is most useful for staying in touch with people around the world without spending lots of money on phone calls. I hope to have time to send out a message tomorrow morning, but may not be able to do that until we are waiting at the airport in Kiev. Thank you very much for your loving concern and prayers as we prepare to travel.

Our young married couple, Alex and Natasha are now WEI students together. Yesterday, they both practiced their conversational skills with me as we spoke about what they are learning about God. When they left they assured me that they would be at our church service at 08.00 in the morning. This was before I even asked. We are having the early service since we have catch a bus to Kiev and then get a ride from the city to the town of Borispol where the international airport is located. Our flight to Frankfurt is actually at 05.30 Monday morning. Then, we wait for the flight to Atlanta that leaves at 12.15 and arrives in Atlanta at 4.25 PM - all according to God's will.

Eryna is a student at the shipbuilding university and she is most diligent with her English studies with the belief that it will help open doors for her. She had very sincere comments about the Bible lesson yesterday.

The beautiful newly completed red brick buildings in the background are expensive condominiums that are situated on the high bluff that overlooks the beautiful river. From a distance, I could see that the top floor has skylights. This is not a common feature in Soviet era apartment buildings like the place where we live. Our student Vadim is one of the people here in the real estate business attempting to sell properties. He said most of his calls come from the sellers wanting to know why no one is buying. Does it sound familiar?

This is one of the streetcars that serve various parts of the spread out city of Mykolayiv.

You hear us frequently telling about the various kiosks around the city. There are several situated near the large building where the church meets. This one is near a tram stop (streetcar) where Luda and Stepan usually catch the first leg of their journey home to the part of the metropolitan area where they live across the river. One of these little places sells freshly baked and fried pies stuffed with jam, potatoes or meat. Very tasty!

Ooops. Be careful where you step as you walk along the sidewalks. This entrance into the underworld of the Cheropakie almost caught me off guard as I was looking for a place to cross the street.

The falling leaves provide some employment for many people who are out early each day sweeping the streets. The sounds and smells of Fall activity are very pleasing. Everyone knows it is a precursor to the winter that always come to places like Nikolaev that are situated near the 47th degree north latitude.

Yesterday after stopping by an ATM and taking enough Hryvnia (Ukraine currency) to pay the rent for the church meeting place during the time we will be in America (6,290), I walked along our familiar route and had to take some photos on such a beautiful day. Our apartment actually costs about the same thing each month and we also have that paid ahead. The church rent includes our separate storage room on the 1st floor.

Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position. (2 Peter 3:17 NIV)
(2 Pedro 3:17 NVI)

Most Holy and Righteous God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for the arrival of another fresh day that bursts forth with power and glory that signifies your very real and active presence in our lives as we wait for the glorious appearing of our Savior. Give us wisdom so that we will not allow any false teachers to influence our trust in your holy scriptures that have been given to us by your Holy Spirit. Give us stronger faith as we study and obey the doctrine of Christ. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

WORD OF THE DAY - Friday 22 October 2010 from Nikolaev, Ukraine

Anna's husband Vadim has now completed all seven lessons in the first WEI book and hopefully will continue his studies on-line while we are away. We have encouraged all students to register on-line with WEI and requested that they assign us to be the teachers for these Nikolaev students since we already have established a rapport with each of them.
Last night we only had our faithful Luda and Stepan in attendance. We sang for a while, prayed and read scriptures together from the Psalms. They are always such a strong encouragement to the work here. Thank you for being faithful in prayer regarding this work of sowing the gospel seeds here in Ukraine. God has given me back the strength that seemed to be missing for a few days when that virus got hold of me. Now, I feel all perky again! Thanks to the Lord.

Anna came with her husband yesterday and brought a gift for us that one of her art students had done. It is very beautiful, especially considering the fact it was done by one of her age 9 - 12 orphan children where she works. This gifted teacher works at a home for orphan children similar to our Boys Home. There they have both boys and girls. We plan to visit there when we return in January and hopefully begin to work with them. Snezhana was not able to come yesterday since she had to take her son to the hospital due to a respiratory sickness.
Pavel has a great sense of humor and we always have a good time of fellowship during our study together yesterday. He is very knowledgeable about world geography and wants to understand what he is reading and hearing in English. He ask good questions about our Bible lessons to make sure he is getting it correct.

The first English using the Bible and WEI lessons study appointment yesterday was with Mikhail, the young man who is working as a sales consultant at a local big box type store. He has his degree in a scientific field and has hopes to improve his English enough to get a job abroad. He is very personable along with being bright and studious. He takes our studies very seriously and has good comprehension of the Bible lessons.

Surely God shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly pestilence. He shall cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you shall trust; his faithfulness shall be your shield and buckler. (Psalm 91:3-4)
(Salmos 91:3-4 Spanish)

O LORD God, our Dear Father in Heaven ~ Thank you for the unanticipated and generous blessings that we receive from your limitless bounty on this new day. Give us a portion of your perfect wisdom so that as our knowledge of facts increases, we will be able to make better choices regarding the use of our time and resources in order to advance the Kingdom of Christ. Help us to be more trusting as we hide ourselves under your protective shelter. Increase our faith in the fabulous invisible reward that is waiting the faithful. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

WORD OF THE DAY - Thursday 21 October 2010 from Nikolaev, Ukraine

Ukraine and its people, continue to fascinate me as I notice some of the unusual methods of handling everyday situations. This old board was placed in an open man hole on the busy street that we use when walking to and from our church meetings. This is a slight improvement over the tree limbs and branches that are actually more common. Apparently, there are no problems for public workers being sued for maleficent behavior that could cause a serious accident like I saw almost happen in the brief minutes that I walked by this spot. Evidently, you are just not supposed to be so stupid that you don't recognize the board or tree branch as a warning sign. As I walked away from the apartment this morning on my way to McDonald's for breakfast and to send the daily WORD, I noticed a teenage girl feeding our stray cats that surround our apartment building. This is something that we also do as we did in Cedar Key when a cat would show up around our door step. This is offensive behavior to many people who have no use for those roaming felines. It does strike me as strange that people will be more concerned about stray dogs and cats than stray and abandoned children. Our work with young orphaned and neglected children here in Nikolaev and in Magadan is right at the top of our priorities next to teaching people how to have eternal life through obedient faith in Jesus Christ. We always notice that the more we are involved with children, the more energy we have to do all the other things necessary for this important work for our Lord. Today I finally feel free from a virus that had me on the side lines most of the day for a couple of days. Galina and I both picked up the same bug as she has also been suffering there at her mama's house. We are trying our best to be healthy as we prepare ourselves for our trip to the USA. Thank you for the many prayers and kind thoughts. God is truly answering all our prayers as we meet more and more people who are willing to learn about God and his plan of salvation for all people.

Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. (2 Chronicles 6:7)

Mighty God, our Dear Heavenly Father ~ Thank you for the fantastic and precious gift of life that excites our mortal bodies upon the arrival of this fresh day. Renew our highest hopes and purposes as we consider the deepest desires of our heart. Give us wisdom so that we will train our mind and energy upon those efforts that will truly bring honor and glory to Christ our Lord whom you have appointed heir of all things. Give us success in those endeavors that will influence souls to obey Jesus as Lord and King over His Kingdom. In the blessed name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

WORD OF THE DAY - Wednesday 20 October from Nikolaev, Ukraine

Galina left by bus to travel overnight to Slavyansk which is in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. She will have one more visit with her mama before we leave for America. They just need to sit and talk for a while which is understandable given all that has happened over the past few months with her papa's death and Elena's lengthy sickness and surgery. We are very thankful for her strength and recovery. Galina plans to catch the bus back and be here on Friday or Saturday. I just talked with her by mobile phone and she arrived safely in Donetsk and was sitting on the bus waiting to leave for Slavyansk. Thank you for the many prayers. I only have four appointments today plus our Wednesday evening Bible study.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 NIV)
(Hechos 1:8 Spanish)

Almighty God, Creator of everything we know about and things that exists that we are not aware of ~ Thank you for the sparkling gift of life on this new day that greets us with brand new opportunities and blessings. Give us wisdom as we read and meditate upon your word so that we will engage ourselves in activities that will bring more souls into the blessed Kingdom of Christ where there is peace, joy, love and hope of eternal life. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

WORD OF THE DAY - Tuesday 05 October 2010

Ludmila comes to our studies after she gets off work at the bank. The bank she works for is one of the largest banking organizations in Europe. She has a very responsible position and takes her studies very seriously. We finished the third lesson last night and now she works on Lesson four. There are seven lessons in each book, and there are three books in the first course. She expresses very sincere thanks that she now has an opportunity to learn the Bible and English at the same time. We discussed a little about God's plan to bring mankind back to Himself after the Fall. When I mentioned something about Jesus, she had a big smile and said "this is so interesting." Being the banker that she is, she asked a question that many others ask, "how can such good lessons be FREE?" I carefully explained that it is a way for us to meet people who want to learn English, and learn the Bible and some may even want to become Christians. She smiled her big smile and responded that "it is possible." We love all our students that God challenges us with. Galina and I are beginning to put Ludmila in the category of our dear Olga from Magadan for the way she studies so carefully. Thank you for the sincere and fervent prayers for this work in God's harvest field of Ukraine. We heard from Brian and Liz Wakefield that they are in the hotel in Kiev. We expect them here in Nikolaev by train at 05.30 tomorrow morning.

Galina regularly speaks to people who answer our advertisements. We have two numbers in our ads that ring on my phone and her phone. That way we try not to miss any calls. Even though we will be traveling to the US later this month, we continue to make appointments so that we can get people enrolled and started out prior to our return in January. We also encourage them to sign up for the on-line courses at www.worldenglishinstitute.org

Vadim and Anna are our only married couple engaged in our English studies using the Bible and the World English Institute lessons. They do their homework and read the extra Bible verses so that they have a better comprehension. They are now working on lesson 3 in Book One. It is an important lesson about Sin.

Our study with Alex who works as an accountant at night and who worked in the USA for 7 months last year, continue with great success. He is very diligent about his studies and is helping his wife study at home. She hasn't gotten up the nerve to come to one of the classes, but he thinks she will come soon. Alex is eager to know more about the Bible, not only English.

Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near. (Isaiah 55:6)

O LORD, the Creator of everything that exists whether visible or invisible ~ Thank you for sending your Son to be our Savior, and to be a Door that makes it possible for us to come with our requests and praise. Give us wisdom and help us to use that wisdom to think more clearly and positively about what we can do in our own lifetimes to influence more people to turn their hearts to Christ in obedient faith. Give us courage and a renewed boldness so that we will take action to carry out the Great Commission of carrying the saving gospel message to all people in the world. In Jesus name we fervently pray, Amen.
