WORD OF THE DAY - 01 May 2010

Do not forget to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. (Hebrews 13:2)

Our Dear Father in Heaven ~ Thank you for the gift of life on this new day that arrives with fresh and lively hopes for experiencing the joy of being your favorite children. As you constantly shower your love upon ungrateful and seemingly unworthy people, give us wisdom so that we will be more like our Lord Jesus Christ in our manner of being hospitable toward new people that enter our lives. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

This morning we change entries on our little planning calendar that greets us each day from its perch on top of the oft opened refrigerator door. Galina keeps this updated regularly, otherwise our wheels would just be spinning. Thanks to Bink, this information is also always in my Day-Timer calendar. Lesya is one of our faculty friends at the university where we go each week. At here invitation, we spent some time yesterday at the Economics Lyceum that is located near the meeting place of the church. Due to this holiday weekend, many students were mysteriously missing from the building. Besides Lesya, we only had three present to hear our lesson. We hope that will lead to more opportunities at this private institution that has many students pursuing English language. In the morning yesterday, we had some errands to run in the center of town, and noticed some fresh scaffolding at the entrance to the building that is known as the old Hotel Ukraine. There are now many private offices and businesses located in this building. We go there for haircuts and to take Hryvnia (Ukrainian currency) from the ATM located inside which is safer than standing on the street. A man on the scaffolding was sanding off several years of corrosion from the large brass emblem that we've always admired. This is part of all the festivities that are planned for this May 1 holiday that is now resembling a renaissance of USSR lore complete with that era parade later this morning. On the boulevard that is where the parade will proceed down today, we noticed a man flat on his back on the street. People were strolling by as if they didn't notice him. Against Galina's urging, I walked over to see if he needed help getting up and out of the middle of the street. When I spoke to him, I simply said mushina! (sir) One eye slowly opened, then the other. He said I'm not a man, I'm a woman. That was enough for us to determine that he was more than slightly inebriated and we then behaved like the other passers by. Our Bible study with Olamide was another very positive experience. He dutifully completes all his assignments and that is in addition to his studies at the Maritime Institute. Galina was mopping the floors of our meeting room and Olamide tried to take her mop, but she told him "you study with David." Later, we decided to treat him to a dinner at McDonalds and this gave us more time to become better acquainted and for me to encourage him to become a teacher/preacher of the Gospel. I think this may be overwhelming to him, but it is just sowing the seeds for him to consider. This morning we have much to do in preparation for our time at the Boys Home and our worship tomorrow. We sincerely appreciate your prayers.
